Surely when thinking of Italian food, the dish Fettuccine Alfredo, is the first that comes to mind, since it is one of the most popular foods in Italian cuisine. This type of pasta is one of the most consumed foods in all parts of the world. Here we tell you how it was created in Rome.
The beginning
Let’s start with the origin of Fettuccine Alfredo dates to 1907 in Rome, where Alfredo Di Lelio opened a restaurant called Piazza Rosa, soon to be closed due to the construction of the Colonna Gallery.
The chef and owner of the place, decided to create an easy, but the high-quality recipe for his beloved wife, since she was expecting Alfredo Di Lelio’s child, however, he could notice that his wife’s health was deteriorating, since she was losing her appetite, Alfredo decided to mix three main ingredients such as:
- Pasta
- Butter
- Parmesan cheese
The fettuccine was the first element he chose, after adding pieces of butter to give it an exquisite flavor, he added Parmesan cheese as the last one.
Its main function was that the dish, besides being delicious, could provide enough nutrients and calories for his wife to replenish herself.
Nobody imagined that the combination of ingredients would become so famous, and the best part of it all was watching Alfredo prepare the dishes directly at the diners’ table.
The encounter with fame
Alfredo decided to add the dish to his mother’s restaurant, where it immediately became popular among locals.
Sometime later, a couple of actors, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford visited the restaurant and when they tasted the Fettuccine Alfredo pasta, they were amazed by the sauce.
The experience was so enjoyable and satisfying that, in appreciation, the couple gave a gold spoon and fork as a gift.
