For frozen dessert lovers, we have one that you will love; it is the spumoni, which is a classic dessert from Italy, composed of layers of the famous «gelato» of different colors and flavors. Originally, it was filled with fruits or nuts inside the ice cream and soaked with some syrup or liquor, but this has changed over time.
In Italy, gelato makers sought to innovate with a special touch to each dessert. Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, of Sicilian origin, is considered the father of gelato, since his establishment, Café Procope in Paris, served the famous creamy spheres.
In its past the spumoni represented the flag of Italy, because it contained traditional ingredients such as cherry, pistachio and vanilla.
Combination of three flavors
The origin of the spumoni is debated, because some Italians claim that it was created in Salento but according to others the ice cream comes from Napoles with the name cassata napoletana.
Neapolitan ice cream (the traditional ice cream bar that combines three flavors strawberry, chocolate and vanilla) is believed to be a descendant of spumoni as is the Banana Split because of its combination of two to three flavors of ice cream; however, its elaboration is different and its layers are a combination of whipped cream, cream, nuts, etc.
Italian immigrants took the recipe with them to the United States, becoming obsessed with the flavor. The spumoni has undergone modifications in its presentation, but it kept its name and little by little it was incorporated into restaurant menus.
Celebrate Spumoni Day
Currently, spumoni is not as popular in Italy; however, National Spumoni Day is celebrated in the United States on August 21 and on November 13 in Canada.
The spumoni is originally mixed with whipped cream, which gives it a fluffy and frothy texture. The creamy creation includes fruit in two layers and a third layer of delicious chocolate.
This dessert is so fresh and intensely flavored that most people like it. If you are looking for an option, we invite you to enjoy this delicious dessert with your loved ones at Ragazzi.
